Leading scholars, academicians, historians and policy makers gathered in Istanbul on January 18, 2018 for a conference titled “A Century Later: The Great War”. The event aimed at commemorating the First World War and providing a platform for scholarly discussion of the Ottoman perspective of the War and its geopolitical effects on the modern day. TRT World Research Centre hosted the conference in collaboration with Bahcesehir University’s Civilization Studies Centre.

The event started with the screening of a documentary titled “Close up World War I” which was produced jointly by TRT and Bahcesehir University. The documentary consists of 22 episodes, each of which lasts 26 minutes and is on air on TRT Documentary channel since November 2017.

It was followed by the opening remarks of the Chairman of Bahcesehir University, Enver Yucel and TRT Director General and Chairman, Ibrahim Eren. Subsequently, a keynote speech was delivered by Turkey’s Presidential Spokesperson Ibrahim Kalin.

The conference comprised of two panel discussions. The first panel aimed on reflecting the battles that took place during World War I and entry of the Ottomans in the Great War. Additionally, the effects of Western and Caucuses fronts on the Ottoman War strategy was discussed and the importance of Gallipoli War and Kut El Amara on Turks were discussed. In this panel, Professor Justin Mccarthy from University of Louisville, Professor Edward J. Erickson from SUNY Cortland, Professor Mehmet Ali Beyhan from Istanbul University and retired Professor Jeremy Salt from Bilkent University were the panellists.

The second panel discussion revolved around the questions of Palestine with a special focus on the changes in the status of Jerusalem before and after the Great War, how Ottoman Empire and Turkey view the question of Palestine and sufferings of people of Palestine face in their daily lives. In this panel, Professor Shafeeq Ghabra from Kuwait Univeristy, Professor Tufan Buzpinar from Istanbul Sehir University, Professor Mahmoud Haddad from Univeristy of Balamand, and Associate Professor Abdallah Marouf Omar from 29 Mayis Universty were the panellists.

Finally, Associate Professor Burhan Koroglu gave the closing remarks of the event from Ibn Haldun University.
